Increasing Reimbursement in Long Term Care

There are many ways the MDS coordinator can increase the reimbursement level of the facility. While quality of care is the top priority, working to get the top level of payment that is justifiably due for services is of the utmost importance. Staffing Data Submission

Long Term Care Nursing Policy
Long term care facilities will be required to electronically submit staffing information based on payroll to CMS beginning July 1, 2016. CMS will use the data to monitor staffing levels and employee turnover and tenure, which can impact the quality of care delivered.
Facility staffing information will be posted on the CMS Nursing Home Compare website used in the Nursing Home Five Star Quality Rating System.

Home Health Compare to Get Star Rating

Home Health Care Nurse and Home Health Nursing Care Plans
A new star rating will be added to the Home Health Compare site, CMS announced.
The new rating measure will be a summary of some of the current provider performance measures the site already offers.
CMS shared its plans for the Home Health Compare Star Ratings at Open Door Forums in December 2014 and February 2015, and asked for comments and suggestions from stakeholders.
Recordings and transcripts from stakeholder calls can be accessed on the CMS Special Open Door Forums page.

Maintenance Therapy to be Covered by Medicare

Maintenance Therapy and Restorative Nursing Programs
Long term care Restorative Nursing programs will see some big changes with the expansion of Medicare to cover Maintenance Therapy.
“Coverage of skilled nursing and skilled therapy services does not turn on the presence or absence of a beneficiary’s potential for improvement, but rather on the beneficiary’s need for skilled care.” CMS announced this week.
“Skilled care may be necessary to improve a patient’s current condition, to maintain the patient’s current condition, or to prevent or slow further deterioration of the patient’s condition. The concept of skilled therapy services can similarly involve not only services that are restorative in nature but, if certain standards are met, maintenance therapy as well.”
Maintenance Therapy  is justified, says CMS, to prevent or slow a decline in condition.
Previous standards required that skilled nursing services result in an improvement to a resident’s condition to qualify for Medicare reimbursement.
Maintenance Therapy and Restorative Nursing Manual Updates to Clarify Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF), Home Health (HH), and Outpatient (OPT) Coverage,  Department Of Health And Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Implementation Date: January 7, 2014
